New Tim Hortons Real Fruit Smoothies offer a full serving of fruit in a healthier, convenient and affordable snack

Helps address national eating habits; Survey finds just five per cent of Canadians say they consume at least 7-10 servings of fruit recommended by the Canada Food Guide

OAKVILLE, ON - March 3, 2011 - Canada is a nation of snackers who have difficulty finding healthier options on-the-go. Tim Hortons helps address those eating habits by introducing Real Fruit Smoothies that offer Canadians a convenient, affordable snack with a full serving of fruit.

Only five per cent of Canadians said they are consuming at least the 7-10 daily servings of fruit and vegetables that the Canada Food Guide recommends for adults, according to an Angus Reid survey conducted for Tim Hortons. At the same time, almost 50 per cent of Canadians say they are not getting enough fruits and vegetables because it's difficult to find convenient options on-the-run. More than a quarter indicated that they don't have the time to buy and prepare fruits and vegetables.

"Balanced snacking is important, especially considering more than eight out of 10 Canadians said they snack daily," said Sandy Schwenger, a registered dietitian. "Good intentions to choose healthier options often fall short when people are busy. Anything that helps us get closer to meeting the goal of 7-10 daily servings of fruit and vegetables is a good thing."

Tim Hortons Real Fruit Smoothies contain no artificial colors or flavors and are fat free. The 10-ounce (small) serving size contains one full serving of fruit and only 130 calories. Real Fruit Smoothies are available in two great tasting flavors - mixed berry and strawberry banana - with an option to add yogurt, for a creamier, low-fat treat of only 160 calories.

"Today, most Canadians make smoothies at home, or search for specialty stores that can be expensive," said Dave McKay, marketing director for beverages at Tim Hortons. "We're excited to offer a more affordable smoothie, conveniently available at your neighborhood Tim Hortons."

The Angus Reid survey results are consistent with other research suggesting that snacking is the fastest growing meal occasion in Canada (NPD Group, Snacking in Canada, 2010).

"Canadians are constantly looking for snacking options that fit their active lifestyles," said McKay. "We're helping fill that gap with healthier choices with our refreshing Real Fruit Smoothies."

Healthier options like Real Fruit Smoothies continue to be added to Tim Hortons' menu. Over the past few years, it has introduced yogurt and berries, low fat and whole grain muffins, chicken wrap snackers, English muffin breakfast sandwiches, herbal and specialty teas and, most recently, slow-cooked, homestyle oatmeal.

Real Fruit Smoothies continues Tim Hortons' longstanding promise of delivering great quality and value, prepared fresh to order, every time. Real Fruit Smoothies will be available at Tim Hortons restaurants across Canada beginning March 7. Priced at $1.99 for 10 oz, vanilla yogurt may be added to Real Fruit Smoothies for an additional 70 cents.
